When you hear the words ‘taxes’ or ‘Internal Revenue Service,’ like many Americans, you may feel a mixture of dread or fear. The idea of the IRS knocking on your door or demanding an audit has long been nightmare-inducing.
It may surprise you to learn that, despite its intimidating reputation, the IRS receives resounding support from the American public. Most taxpayers believe that cheating on taxes is completely unacceptable and honesty is of critical importance.
A full 85% of Americans say that it is not at all acceptable to cheat on taxes, and an overwhelming majority (95%) believe that it is every American’s civic duty to pay their fair share of taxes and that people who cheat on their taxes should be held accountable1.
Most Americans place great faith in the IRS. Trust in the organization to enforce tax laws has grown significantly over the past five years. About 80% of taxpayers say it is very important that the IRS ensures corporations and high-income taxpayers are being honest about taxes. So, while paying taxes isn’t always the most pleasant thing to do, we can all agree that it’s the right thing to do!
That’s not to say that one shouldn’t work to minimize their tax liability within the law. This is a taxpayer’s right and what we strive to help our clients achieve.
